Having worked with NUS Scotland for a number of years now, it was to Studio 9 they turned again when deciding to produce a magazine to help students wishing to study overseas.
The brief was an interesting one – to produce a 48 page magazine in the style of a 70s style holiday brochure. The finished product definitely shouts 70s kitsch but they loved it.
In addition to this we also produced a range of ancillary marketing materials (banner display materials, etc.) for use in the roadshow campaign.
Venture Scotland runs a personal development programme aimed at empowering disadvantaged and socially excluded young people. They do this through a range of ourdoor activities, environmental education and personal and social development work.
As the organisation has grown, so has the number of volunteers (currently 100+). The need for a training and information handbook was paramount, at which point Studio 9 was invited to provide a solution.
The result was a multi-section, colour-coded, loose-leaf, accessible and easily updatable training handbook which has apparently surpassed their expectations in terms of usefulness and design.
Studio 9 have also recently designed Venture Scotland's Annual Report and vehicle livery.
Recently reformed from the Scottish Consumer Council, the new Consumer Focus Scotland agency needed a way to introduce themselves to their audience.
Studio 9 was engaged to design and develop a short newsletter style publication to do just that.
The 12 page newsletter forms an introduction to CFS' various services, on-going partnership projects and publications as well as including a record of who's who within the organisation in the form of a large photographic chart (including an electronic version for in-house updates).
Having been well received, Studio 9 will now be producing a similar publication for Consumer Focus Wales (in English and Welsh!).
EAST, a what's on magazine for Dundee, was conceived by Benchmark PR as part of a campaign to promote Dundee as the place to come to for entertainment, shopping and great things to do.
Studio 9 were approached by Benchmark to design and produce a 68 page magazine which would serve as a hub to the other efforts of the Dundee campaign.
The guide covered many different aspects of Dundee – in particular, it's cultural and commerce centres as well as entertainment and visitor attractions, with the intent of increasing visitor attendance to each area.
Studio 9 worked with Benchmark and the local Dundee Traders and Hoteliers Association to produce an eye-catching guide which delivered as per our brief.
Who would have thought that outdoor hot tubs would have been popular in Scotland – what with our weather, but popular they are.
For Advanced Arctic Spas they sell like hot cakes (or hot tubs) and they were in need of a new brochure to use at the various events they attend such as the Royal Highland Show so they came to Studio 9.
This was an interesting one for Studio 9 as it involved combining a few different hot tub brand styles and coming up with a look for Advanced Arctic Spa's all of their own but we managed it.
The result was the brochure you see here which was so successful that it was recently updated with the instruction "update it but under no circumstances change the overall look". Enough said!
Cluny Clays and Cluny Kids is a fantastic family attraction set in the rolling Fife countryside. With top of the range facilities for numerous activities and sports, including purpose built meeting and conference facilities.
Cluny Clays has grown since 1991 to become one of Fife's main business and tourist venues with an annual visitor count of 86,000 upwards.
We were delighted recently to design and produce a promotional brochure for this fantastic venue with an illustrated fold out map.
Fabb Scotland is a national charity for kids with various special needs. It's main aim is to provide an environment where the kids can come together and socialise in a safe and friendly environment.
This is achieved through the many clubs and events organised and run by Fabb Scotland every year.
Even more important are the residential holidays that Fabb organises providing respite for both kids and parents alike.
Aware that the old Fabb name had become outdated (Phab – Physically Handicapped and Able Bodied), it was obvious that a re-branding was necessary.
The Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) is a trusted and respected organisation, designed to help people at times of critical need.
When it came time to produce a 24 page consultation document as part of the current 'Our Future Strategy' campaign, it was to Studio 9 they turned. Having worked with us before they knew the service would be just what they needed.
In fact we produced two versions of the consultation document, one for patients and public consumption and one directed to their NHS Partners.
As these were quite high print runs, there could be no room for error. Both documents were delivered to their respective audiences on time and more importantly, on budget.
Both were well received.
The Scottish Council on Archives (SCA) leads on advocacy and development of archive services in Scotland and is committed to developing a national strategy for those services. Studio 9 were therefore asked to design and produce a brochure that would give a glimpse into this largely hidden world of archives and records.
Through this publication, the SCA seeks to identify and promote the positive impact Scotland’s archives have for our communities, culturally and economically, and to show how the sector can contribute to Scottish Government priorities.
This was easily one of our favourite projects from 2011.
One of our strengths is book design and production, which can mean working directly for authors or for publishers - and sometimes both together.
Such was the case with the popular and bestselling 'Raptors – A Field Guide for Surveys and Monitoring'. Now in its second edition, (the first was also produced by Studio 9), the guide is for people who watch, survey and monitor raptors in Britain and Ireland.
Funding came largely from Scottish Natural Heritage, with assistance from other Statutory Conservation Agencies in Britain and Ireland. At the time of writing, it looks like the second edition is about to sell out again!

Amy Winehouse, 14th September 1983 – 23rd July 2011, was unquestionably one of the best British musical talents that the world has ever seen. Her tragic death at the age of just 27 shook the music industry and left millions of fans devastated at the loss of an unforgettable star.
This book is a comprehensive guide to all things Amy Winehouse, including the highs and lows of her career, her life, love and relationships and the events leading up to her sudden and tragic death.
As we're big fans of Amy we were honoured when PBR publications asked us if we would consider producing this tribute book to her.
The 'Think Positive' campaign was launched to highlight and help tackle the growing issue of poor mental heath amongst the student population of Scotland.
Think Positive works with students’ associations in Scotland to provide training in Scottish Mental Health First Aid and campaigning and to provide students with the tools to look after their own mental wellbeing and recognise mental ill health in others.
Studio 9 were asked to design and produce a range of materials in association with the campaign. The main focus was a Toolkit consisting of a binder populated with various resources for use by campaigners. This in turn was supplemented by various in-depth reports and event support materials. The campaign continues...
Network IT Solutions are an Edinburgh based IT support company providing IT support, solutions and services to a wide range of clients including design companies, property management, solicitors, restaurants etc... in Edinburgh and throughout central Scotland.
When approached by Network IT Solutions to design a new brand identity, website and supporting promotional materials, we decided on a strong and distinctive look with colours that would help them stand out from the crowd.
Rather than settle for the usual dry IT company look, a fresh and bright approach was called for which fits right in with their fresh and bright way of doing business.
For its size, Scotland has a remarkably rich diversity of landscapes, seascapes and wildlife. The Changing Nature of Scotland provides a unique overview of environmental change across the land, water and seas of Scotland.
The forty-two chapters have been written by over 80 authors from a wide range of backgrounds including industry, health, conservation charities, academics and government agencies.
The Changing Nature of Scotland represents the 11th conference book Studio 9 have produced for SNH over our 10 year association.

'Bright, colourful and fun' is the brief we get from the publishers of these books. So in response, we make them bright, colourful and fun. Simples!
Packed with images of and information on their favourite stars, these annuals are a sure fire winner for younger teenage Christmas stockings all over the UK.

The Student Engagement Toolkit is an NUS-HEA project, designed to help students' unions and institutions work together to enhance students' academic engagement.
The online version consists of resources in the form of articles, case studies and practical tools to support sharing and develop best practice across higher education.
Shown here is one of the practical interactive tools designed by Studio 9 for small groups to discuss their beliefs and views on the role of students in institutional issues. This consists of a folder pack containing various tear-off question cards, workbook and poster sheets to record answers resulting from the discussion.
In addition, Studio 9 was responsible for designing the overall branding for this campaign.
One of the best methods of advertising your business is a sign - or even better - a travelling sign, i.e. your business transport (car or van).
With their vehicles out there traversing the roads between Fife and the Borders, Red Circle Locksmiths wanted to make sure they got noticed.
Enter Studio 9 for a brand make over, the focus of which was the new logo and colour scheme and from what we hear, its working. The owners have had many favourable comments on the new look and business is good.
sparqs is a service funded by the Scottish Funding Council to assist and support students, students' associations and institutions to improve the effectiveness and engagement in quality assurance and enhancement in institutions across Scotland.
We have worked for sparqs for many years producing their annual & research reports and their marketing & training materials.
Whilst working on a brand refresh for sparqs, we were asked to produce their corporate plan document seen here and a series of marketing leaflets to promote their various areas of activity.
...the scandal of a property speculation by civic leaders – its collapse and their ruin – and the architecturally glorious outcome.
Having trusted us with the production of his previous publication – "The General Rule: A Guide to Customary Weights and Measures" – it was to Studio 9 that Vivian Linacre (author) turned again.
As a resident of one of the splendid villas at Marshall Place, this was a more personal project for Vivian.
The book, which received excellent reviews, outlines the involvement of Thomas Hay Marshall (15 July 1808) twice Provist of Perth and his historic role in the scandal which ultimately led to the building of Marshall Place.
This was a project which we thoroughly enjoyed collaborating on with Vivian.
Studio 9 has produced many annuals for a variety of football clubs over the years and we still get a kick out of every one we do.
Full of colour and cutouts, they give a designer the chance to flex those creative muscles and go to town on the layouts.
They're really fun to produce, but on a serious note, they do have to appeal to the market they are intended for which is the younger football fan from single figures up to mid-teens. Therefore, we work closely with the publishers to make sure we meet the brief each time.
Other clubs we have produced annuals for are, Liverpool, Manchester United, Celtic, Hibs, Chelsea and others.
